It’s been over a year now since my writer-friend Andrea Cheng died – too quickly and too young – of cancer. She wrote some marvelous books, some of which are reviewed on my website, and she gave me invaluable advice about my writing over the years I knew her.
Quite a few years ago, Andrea’s husband, Jim, interviewed the two of us for a podcast for the publisher Lee & Low. We chatted for 30 minutes about how we both go about writing nonfiction. The link is below if you’d like to get a taste of how differently we writers go at our craft. More importantly, you’ll get to hear the voice and the thoughts of a children’s writer who honed her pieces until they were pitch perfect. Andrea’s stories (Etched in Clay and The Year of the Book are two of her best) were delicate and insightful and they poured out of her.
I miss her. The world of children’s books misses her.
