Who Done It? by Olivier Tallec; illustrated by the author; Chronicle Books, 2015. 32 pages; $15.99 (hardcover); reading level: ages 3-6.
With a board-book style cover and thicker-than-usual pages that turn from bottom to top like a calendar, this picture book is sturdy, unique, and inspired. Each two-page spread sports two rows of animals and/or kids rendered in pencil and acrylic paint with a “Who?” question at the top. Finding the correct “who” on each page requires some deeper “reading”…. of emotion, for example (“Who’s shy about dancing?” “Who’s trying to scare you?”), or of the effect of a previous unseen action (“Who ate all the jam?”) or of figurative language (“Who’s pulling a prank?” “Who couldn’t hold it?”). The book will continue to engage after the answers (pictured on the last page) are divulged: each and every figure on each and every page is dressed or doing something that will spark further questions and conversation. The simplicity of the text and page layouts suggest a quick read; the depth of thought behind them will cause you to linger. A perfect adult/child pre-reading experience.
