Gator Dad by Brain Lies; illustrated by the author. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016. 32 pages; $17.99 (hardcover); reading level: ages 3-7.
This stay-at-home alligator dad takes care of his three offspring his way! Breakfast fish fly through the air, errands are run with the emphasis on “run,” and a neat house is definitely a low priority. The acrylic illustrations (dark as the family rises, dark again at bedtime, exuberant and bright in between) capture the sound, action, and imagination of the day perfectly. There is wonderful joy here (as the toothy, adoring young gators barely keep up with their energetic dad) along with a large dollop of love (“I may not be able to quiet the storm, but…here in my arms you’ll be safe and warm.”) Working moms will be horrified; at-home dads and their kids will love this one.
