ABC Dream; by Kim Krans; Random House, 2016. 32 pages; $16.99 (hardcover); reading level: ages 2-5.
The letters on the pages of this alphabet book are the main event: large and bold, some solid black and white, others plaid or quilted (you guessed it – P and Q!). It’s the surrounding illustrations, however, that are unforgettable. Fish and fireflies glide through the air side by side, a violin hangs from a vine, the earth and an egg float together in black space and the biblical lion lies down with a lamb. The colors are soft, the pen and ink details so fine you can see the individual hairs on a braid and the texture of a watermelon. Some of the letter words – like U for unicorn – are obvious. Others need to be searched out: the unicorn is upside down, “fern” and “argyle” will probably be brand new words that will need to be pointed out (and added to growing vocabularies). A list of all the letter words is appended (because even adults will miss many!). The perfect book for teaching, talking and dreaming with a preschooler or two cuddled on your lap.
