When Tommy loses his (don’t say the word or you’ll set him off!) t-r-u-c-k, the whole family’s day goes haywire. Tommy refuses help from Mom, Dad, sister, brother, and Grandma: “I don’t want jeeps or cars or planes,/Or boats or bikes or trikes or trains./I don’t want green or blue or black./I only want my red truck back.” He conducts a search that turns house and yard upside down. The delightfully off kilter pencil and watercolor illustrations, in which every character is having a bad hair day and is wackily out of proportion, perfectly capture Tommy’s desperate, truck-less world. The search is fruitless, tragedy looms…until the turn of a page reveals the culprit, who’s been visible to sharp eyes all along. Tommy is as magnanimous with the guilty party as he has been self-absorbed earlier. We’ve all lived through this drama, as either parent or child, and it’s delightfully reenacted here.
