Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes

by Mem Fox; illustrated by Helen Oxenbury; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2008. 32 pages; $16.99 hardcover; $11.99 oversized boardbook format; reading level: ages 2-5.

Fox’s spare, rhyming text spotlights pairs of babies from around the world, connected by the refrain, “And both of these babies, as everyone knows, had ten little fingers and ten little toes.” In the last few pages, the panorama narrows to a particular baby “…who was truly divine, a sweet little child who was mine, all mine.” Oxenbury’s illustrations never disappoint: her babies’ faces are expressive and exuberant, the delightfully dishevelled mother’s final kiss on the tip of her baby’s nose a perfect ending. Perfect for the lap audience, this book fires on all cylinders.
